Gay/Bi Men’s Meditation & Encounter Group (October 2016)

July 29th, 2016

by Kip Williams

This 10-week group supports gay and bisexual men to improve self-awareness and authenticity with other men outside of the bars and dating/hookup apps.

Overview

“How do other people see me?” Beginning with a day-long urban retreat on October 15 in downtown San Francisco, gay and bisexual men will explore this question in a 10-week group designed to expose the complex web of thoughts and feelings that begin to develop within moments of first meeting each other. While we usually conceal these private experiences deep inside, exploring them together in a safe and structured way provides many benefits, including:

  • Developing self-understanding and interpersonal communication
  • Getting honest feedback about your impact on other people
  • Breaking down your fears and insecurities about people seeing the “real you”
  • Practicing new ways to handle anger and conflict
  • Aligning your intentions and actions to build stronger relationships
  • Learning more about how other people see your strengths and resources

This group also provides an opportunity for men to learn about and practice meditation. No prior experience with meditation is necessary.

Structure

Each 2-hour group will begin with a 20-minute guided meditation and reflection, followed by an hour and a half of conversation. Experienced facilitators will establish a safe and supportive environment and prompt discussions intended to encourage honesty and getting outside of your “comfort zone.” As conflicts and misunderstandings arise, we will work to provide opportunities for authenticity and personal growth.

The group will be limited to 10 participants who will commit to attend all meetings. We will begin with a day-long “urban retreat” on Saturday, October 15. Then we will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 p.m. through December 14. We will not meet during the week of Thanksgiving.

Ideal participants are gay and bisexual men who are motivated to improve their authenticity and communication with other men. No prior experience with meditation is necessary, but participants should be willing to try it. Since group meetings can evoke strong feelings, we highly encourage all group members to see an individual therapist as well.

Fees

$150 for the day-long retreat; $60 for subsequent weekly sessions

Fees should not prohibit anyone’s participation. Please call to discuss a reduced fee.
